1:1 Support Worker – Summer Camp

We are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic support worker for our summer camp in July and August. Enjoy spending a large part of the day outside in our beautiful park setting.  Reporting directly to the VWVA childcare manager, the 1:1 Support Worker is responsible for developing and incorporating strategies to support an individual child with autism during summer camp, assisting them to be able to participate in a meaningful way in the planned activities along with the other attendees.

There could also be further opportunities to continue assisting the same child in the fall during before and after school care throughout the school year (optional).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Adapt daily learning activities to enhance child’s access to the curriculum.
  • Supervise children both inside and outside to support inclusion, development and social skills.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching techniques including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating and reinforcing.
  • Attend to children’s physical needs for toileting, eating and sleeping as promptly as possible.
  • Follow daily eating routines as determined by supervisor.
  • Perform necessary housekeeping duties as required.

– Contribute to the ongoing operations of the summer camp.

  • Follow licensing requirements.
  • Carry out responsibilities as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information related to the centre’s children, their parents, and staff.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience working with children in a child care or recreation-based setting
  • Ability to understand and apply current child development and child care philosophy
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of enthusiasm, imagination and personal motivation
  • Understanding and ability to apply first aid and emergency response
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and positive customer service skills
  • Ability to maintain records
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kg.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

  • Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Clean criminal record check
  • minimum of at least a Responsible Adult certificate

WORK SETTING

  • Victoria West Community Centre
  • Indoor and outdoor activities
  • Standing, bending, crouching, some lifting.

Salary: $19.00-$21.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.
